The Tampa Incident
Using the resources in The Tampa Affair — 10 Years on, organise students in pairs or small groups to browse the following series of articles and images and select at least two different perspectives of the Tampa incident for further investigation. ‘Tampa — historical’ has a slideshow of 30 images, including political cartoons.
The Cronulla Riots 2005
The role of the media in reporting the Cronulla Riots has potential for more detailed study. A range of sources could be used to expand on issues raised in the investigation. Two sources follow:
- Media Investigation: Reporting diversity — The Cronulla Riots (.pdf 468 kB). A critical analysis of the media reporting of the Cronulla Riots in The Australian, Daily Telegraph and Sydney Morning Herald (Journalism in multicultural Australia case study)
- Research report: Talkback Radio: an emotional homeland and heartland (.pdf 455 kB) by Jacqi Ewart — this report touches on the Cronulla Riots and the positive role of the Arabic community radio station. Material in pages 8, 75 and 80 specifically reference the incident.
