Achievement and learning outcomes
As a result of this unit of study students will:
- investigate key changes to Australia’s immigration policy, including the White Australia policy and ‘Populate or perish’, from 1901 until 1973
- examine the tensions between ‘Assimilation’ and ‘Cultural heritage’ in Australian immigration policies
- investigate the experiences of migrants and refugees coming to Australia, including displaced persons and Indo-Chinese refugees
- explore how and why Government actions historically play a significant role in alleviating discrimination and anti-racism (Commonwealth Racial Discrimination Act 1975; Australia as a Multicultural Society Charter 1977)
- explore public debates about multiculturalism, such as the Blainey Debate 1984
- examine the historical promotion of immigration, multiculturalism and anti-racism
- investigate the Cronulla riots (2005) as a case study in racism and conflict in Australian society.
This will be evident when students:
- Complete a presentation which explains how and why Australia’s immigration policy changed, including the White Australia policy and policies reflected by the slogan ‘Populate or perish’, from 1901 until 1973.
- Identify and explain racial discrimination as the key feature of the White Australia Policy.
- Identify and define the key features of ‘assimilation’ and ‘cultural heritage’ in immigration policies until the 1970s.
- Explain the nature and significance of the Indo-Chinese migration experience from a range of perspectives in a multi-modal report.
- Explain the features and areas of racial discrimination according to the Commonwealth Racial Discrimination Act 1975.
- Research and create an Australian humanitarian program submission.
- Research and describe the types of responses by the community and government to Blainey’s claims.
- Explain how posters and information documents have been used in promoting immigration programs and policies like multiculturalism and anti-racism in the post-war to 2000 period. Evaluate how effective this method has been in that period.
- Evaluate the causes and consequences of the Cronulla Riots 2005.
